The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.
But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming...
This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.
It wants the truth.
A Monster Calls is a book about a young boy Conor who is visited in the night by a strange ancient monster. Conor is going through a rough time with his mother dying of cancer. This monster shares stories with Conor and eventually forces Conor to face an even greater monster that haunts his nightmares.
The first thing I noticed about this book was how well it was printed. The paper, the cover, etc. were all top quality and throughout the book are really well done illustrations. The book is just plain beautiful in every way.
As to the story, it is a really unique and compelling read. It is hard to discuss it too much without spoiling the story, but I found it to be very engrossing. The characters were all really well developed, and believable. What Conor is going through is something one can relate to, and the monster is just plain intriguing and interesting, and not at all what you would first expect. The stories it tells are quite fun to listen to.
Overall this was a great read and I could not put it down. I finished it in less than a day, and it is a new favorite of mine. This is by far the best book I have ever read by Patrick Ness.
