Deep within the mortal world of Eiddoril, war rages and the blood of innocents flows freely. Once protected by the four elements—Earth, Fire, Water and Air—Eiddoril was a peaceful, beautiful land. Now, after three hundred years of being ravaged by an evil lord and abandoned by their creators, the people and land are dying.

In the kingdom of Gareth, an orphan girl is raised as one of the royal family. But when she begins to have vivid nightmares it leads her to question where she really came from. Her questions lead her to Fitch, an old magic user, who helps her discover a shocking truth. Karah is not human, but instead part of a long-forgotten race. Desiring answers, she sets out to uncover the secrets of her past, and defeat the enemy wreaking havoc across the land.

In this fantasy tale, Karah must somehow find the strength to fulfill a destiny that has been forced upon her and discover the dragon within. She cannot fail. The future of creation depends on her.

Interview with Author Cindy Lyle

Can you talk a little about what the book is about?

The Dragon Within is a fast paced fantasy adventure told in first person multiple POV. Dragons are the main characters and you get to hear their story straight from them. Book one introduces you to Karah who must embark on a dangerous journey of self-discovery and a quest to save her world from destruction.

Where did you get the idea for the book?

I’m a very avid reader of all things fantasy and I love the supernatural and sci-fi, so you can imagine my ideas and thoughts are pretty far out there most of the time. The main idea for The Dragon Within actually came from a crazy dream I had. It was one of those rare dreams that actually stuck with me so I scribbled some ideas down and it grew from there.

What message do you want readers to get from reading the book?

No matter how hard something seems, you can never give up. Believe in yourself, accept your fate and realize that there is good and bad in everyone and sometimes hard to find balance. Oh and of course have fun reading it and getting lost in the magic of fantasy!

How long did it take to write the book?

Longer than I wanted, lol! I guess from start to finish it took about a year and a half. It’s hard to find time to live your life and be writer. Writing consumes you and you need that separate time to do what needs to be done. Most occasions life doesn’t let you have that time.

Who is your favorite character, or what character was the most fun to write?

I think my favorite character is Karah. I wanted to make her as human as possible and have her go through everything a person might face in their lives. I love how she is so brave, but she always has this nagging doubt that she can never be what everyone needs her to be. She is caring and loving but she doesn’t hesitate to tell you if you are being an idiot. She is a heroine but she’s not perfect and I think that makes her very relatable.

Can you talk about how you wrote it? Did you do any outlining? Did it take you in any unexpected directions?

Most times I just sat down in front of my computer and typed. I do have a notebook where I have scribbles about plot or things I need to add or delete from a certain scene, but as a rule I don’t outline before I write. The direction of the book took a lot of unexpected turns but I think that’s what makes it a good story. I just let my mind flow and I think it produced a pretty good product.

If you could go back and change anything in the novel, what would it be?

Well I actually did go back and change some things in the novel. This is my second time publishing The Dragon Within. It was first released about a year ago and even though I received a lot of good feedback, there were also some bad. I took those bad reviews and used the information to my benefit. The story itself, everyone loved, it was the structure that got me bad marks. So I found a new publisher that I could work better with, did a lot of work with the mechanics of the story and re published. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. As for the main story I don’t think I would change anything except for maybe keeping one of the characters around for a little longer but I can’t talk about that without spoilers!

How did you come up with the cover?

The eclipsed sun inside the dragon eye represents a symbol that Karah carries on her body. It is a mark that she doesn’t fully understand until near the end of the book. The book is also primarily about dragons so I wanted that portrayed on the cover. I chose just to use the eye because Karah needs to search inside herself to find The Dragon Within.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I have loved to write since high school. It was one of the very few ways I felt comfortable expressing my self. It wasn’t until I actually started to write this novel that I thought I could actually make it as an author.

What are you favorite books and authors?

My favorite books to read are fantasy and urban fantasy. As I said before I love the supernatural and my passion lies with dragons and magic. Some of my favorite authors are Terry Brooks, R.A Salvatore, Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews.

What are you working on next?

I’m currently working on book two of The Creation Chronicles. I’m hoping to have it finished by the spring of 2014.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?

My advice is, don’t give up and keep following that dream. Being an author is not easy and whoever says that it is, is crazy. Having said that, you have to realize that being an author is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have. The joy you feel when someone reads your work is amazing and so worth all of the blood, sweat and tears that you put into it. If you truly believe you have a good story to tell than don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.

How do you juggle writing and family time?

Very carefully! I’m still working on book two, almost a year and half after I finished book one, so that should tell you something. My family comes first so there are days and through the summer sometimes months I don’t even think about writing. I do what I can when I have the time which is one of the benefits of being an indie author!

Excerpt

Movement caught my attention again, and I heard them moving further along the bank away from me, so I decided to make a run for it. If I stayed here any longer, I was going to be discovered. I steeled myself and prepared to make my escape, but as I turned around and prepared to run into the safety of the forest, I stumbled right into the point of a blade. My own sword dropped uselessly to the ground as sharp pain racked my body. I tried to pull away, but the sharp edge drove deeper into my body. I looked down at the red blossoming on the front of my shirt and then looked up into the eyes of my killer. They were cold, black, and evil. They were eyes I had seen before, I was certain of it.

They were the eyes of the Dark Lord.

His voice echoed throughout my soul as he towered over me. “We meet again, my pretend goddess. This time will be the last.” As I slumped forward, leaning my weight against the evil man, I began to fade from this world. Commotion and shouts of alarm erupted around me. I heard swords clashing, and then a bright, brilliant light encased me.The Dark Lord screamed in outrage. The sound was terrifying and inhuman. The sword was ripped from my abdomen, and blood flowed from my body. I fell to the ground and listened to the struggle going on around me. I felt the wind pick up, and debris flew around as if a giant bird was flying overhead, but I had no strength to look up. My body turned toward the creek, and I saw figures engaged in combat.

About Cindy Lyle

I grew up in a small town called Uxbridge which is located in Ontario, Canada. I have been around horses my whole life, and I love the outdoors (as long as there is no snow, I hate winter!). I now live in Ajax with my husband Joe and our two children, Hannah and Josh. I love to read and when I find the time, write. I love fantasy and have a pretty intense collection of dragons, weapons and anything else my husband considers strange! I hope to one day publish the full series of Karahs adventures and who knows maybe one day I’ll be someone’s favorite author.

Sadly, some of us do not use FB and Twitter so are unable to participate in drawings such as this one but it does look like an interesting read and I wish you success with it.
